The organisers of the West Sevens Series have postponed the inaugural Nadi leg which was scheduled to be held this Friday at Prince Charles Park.

The new date for the Series first tournament is on May 13-14.

West Sevens Series co-ordinator Biu Tadranu says the decision to move the tournament to another date was made in consultation with the Nadi Town Council and after assessing the damage left behind by tropical cyclone Winston.

“It is unfortunate that Fijians all over the country had to go through such a horrific experience. We are certain, though, that people will rise beyond this situation to rebuild their lives,” Tadranu says.

Tadranu explains that West Sevens has a key focus on player welfare and safety.

“We do not want to compromise player safety by staging the Nadi tournament, when essential services are still not available to most people and while the country is still trying to get things back to normal.”

Tadranu says West Sevens has tried to reach out and communicate the new date to all teams that had registered but because there is no power and internet and telephone lines are also very weak right now it has been difficult.

“For now, we encourage all the team officials and players to attend to the needs of their families and divert all their focus to rebuilding their lives. We hope that teams will take the new date as a positive as they will get more preparation time before the tournament.”

Tadranu adds that the new date will also allow West Sevens to stage an even better and well organised rugby tournament.
