A family of Sinuvaca Village on Koro Island is still trying to come to terms with the death of their mother who died during Tropical Cyclone Winston on Saturday.

Seventy-seven-year-old Makereta Marama was swept away and died while 10-month-old baby, Apisai Vulaono is still missing after huge waves swept through the village on Saturday morning during the height of TC Winston.

The late Mrs Marama’s daughter, Mariana Vukivuki, 44, said she swam with them through the waters before she found shelter at a nearby wooden house.

“When we were outside the water had reached our chest, we then swam further where she saw a wooden house. While standing there the concrete wall of the toilet and bathroom fell and hit her,” Mrs Vukivuki said.

“The fallen wall slammed her and drowned her underneath.

“We were at the evacuation centre the next morning when a woman she had been swimming with came up alone so I knew she had died.”

She said she was still shocked to lose her mother during the short period of time the monster cyclone hit the village.
