A farmer’s heroic act to save a family in Cyclone Winston left him injured, unable to walk.

Twenty-five-year-old Esala Yauvoli was fleeing to safety when he saw the roof of a family’s house behind him blown off during the height of the monster storm last Saturday.

When huge waves swept through Nasau Village that morning, Mr Yauvoli decided to flee to higher ground.

On a hill, he saw the family in need of help, he then ran back to the village to save them.

“I broke their glass door to get through to them. I could see that they didn’t know what to do,” Mr Yauvoli recalled yesterday.

“While trying to cross through the passage between their toilet and bathroom, I heard something smashed through the glass door. I got a shock when I looked down my leg was bleeding.”

The brave farmer said he never felt any pain and he didn’t want it to stop him from saving them.

“The only thing I was thinking of was my life and that of that family. I then told them to take the lead which they did.

“Till this day I’m still thankful and lucky, even though I’m injured and not able to walk, I was able to save another family.”

He said that would be an experience and memory he would never forget.

Mr Yauvoli is among the hundreds of villagers being sheltered at the Tutua Nasau Primary School which is being used as an evacuation centre for the whole village.

Government and Republic of Fiji Military Forces teams are on the island helping the villagers.
