A 23-year-old mother yesterday shared the painful experience she endured when Tropical Cyclone (TC)  Winston ravaged Sinuvaca Village on Koro Island last  Saturday.

Loraini Biaukula’s  firstborn and only child, 10-month-old Apisai Vulaono, was swept away by huge waves from his father’s arms while they were trying to get to safety.

Mrs Biaukula said her husband, Alifereti Daku, was holding baby Apisai when two huge waves hit their village and swept him away.

“When we came out the water was up to our chest so we swam and clung onto a coconut tree. My husband was holding our son in the water,” Mrs Biaukula said.

“While we were swimming, he was feeling weak and when two waves came it took him away from us. It was so hard for us to live not seeing him again. We cried all the way.”

She said all they thought about was to get to safety and find his body.
