Almost every village in Ra suffered similar devastation and damages of house and farms from Cyclone Winston yesterday.

Focus will now be for heavily-battered Ra in the Western division as most infrastructure is either badly damaged or completely destroyed after last Saturday’s tragedy.

Commissioner Western Manasa Tagicakibau said in a meeting at his office yesterday: “The level of destruction sustained after cyclone Winston is really bad therefore Rakiraki will be the centre of attention for Western Division.”

“Teams have already been sent to Rakiraki, which is in a very ugly situation at the moment.”

He also said Government resources from other towns would be deployed to Rakiraki so immediate help could be provided to the affected.

“Government resources like vehicles and other machinery from less-affected areas like Nadi and Sigatoka will be taken to Rakiraki to help in the cleaning process.”

Vinesh Kumar, Principal Agriculture Officer West said that vegetables, fruits and root crops were badly destroyed in Ra.

“Rakiraki sustained 100 per cent loss on vegetables, fruits and root crops after the cyclone and four teams have been sent to the area to mobilise and assess damages,” Kumar said.

District Medical Officer, Dr Susana Nakalevu mentioned that most hospitals and health centres were affected after the cyclone.

“Waimaro Medical Centre, Nanukuloa Health Centre, Rakiraki Health Centre, Ra Maternity Hospital and Vunitogoloa Medical Centre have been badly affected in Rakiraki therefore more priority will be given to this area in terms of providing medical needs,” Dr Nakalevu said.
