More than 50 families on Nakodu Village in Koro are homeless after their homes were blown apart by Tropical Cyclone Winston on Saturday.

Village spokesperson Kameli Turagakula said they were fortunate no lives were lost despite the trail of destruction TC Winston left behind.

“The victims are now sheltering at a few houses that were not massively damaged during the cyclone,” Mr Turagakula said.

“This would at the least take us five to six years to rebuild our village to what it used to be.”

The village comprises more than 300 people. He said one of the concerns the village had now was the danger of disease outbreak.

“All our water sources were destroyed in the cyclone. We are now drinking water from a creek on the upper part of the village.

“We are worried that this water might be contaminated and can cause sickness to our villages especially children.”

Mr Turagakula was thankful to the Government for their quick response and relief provided to the villages on Koro Island including their village.
