Mudu Village headman Pita Waqavou, of Koro Island, counted his blessings after he escaped a night of horror.

“I am so lucky to be alive and I am happy that my family is all safe and well,” he said.

Mr Waqavou, 53, was among the 14 injured villagers from Koro Island who were airlifted to Nausori International Airport yesterday and were taken straight for treatment and admission at CWM Hospital in Suva.

Mr Waqavou said: “We have been frequently telling the villagers that there was a cyclone coming our way and we had been putting up shutters but we didn’t know that the cyclone was accompanied by tidal waves.

“I have shifted my family- wife and three grandchildren, up to higher ground and I was helping other families to move to higher ground. The wind grew stronger and the day grew darker, all we could hear was rushing of winds and the smashing waves.

“I did not know that the house I was in was getting weak; the walls collapsed and fell on top of me but I was lucky to have been saved by those that saw me.

“My left leg cannot move and at this point I cannot say who is lucky and who is not as all of us faced the same agony and pain which left us helpless and it will take God’s love to help us forget the pain we all went through,” he said.

At least 22 injured people have now been brought to Suva and admitted at CWM Hospital.
