Despite the nationwide suffering left behind by monster Tropical Cyclone (TC) Winston, people in the North still find solace in their hearts to help their fellow Fijians who were devastated by the disaster.

Commissioner Northern Jovesa Vocea said assistance had poured in after a meeting with stakeholders in Labasa after the disaster.

Yesterday Mr Vocea received a $10,000 cheque from Hotel NorthPole and cartons and bags of food items and clothes from Benau Youth Club (BYC).

Rewa Rice Limited also donated 400 bags of five kilogram (5kg) rice – worth of $2000.

“I am very happy to see business operators and clubs contributing whatever they can to help the homeless and victims of Tropical Cyclone Winston,” Mr Vocea said.

“If people can help, victims will have hope and things will get back to normal quickly. I want to see people willing to help, be it in cash or kind. It will be of great assistance.”

BYC vice-president Arunesh Prasad said their club consisted of 11 members. They gathered clothes and donations from their families and transported them to Macuata House.

Hotel owner Vinesh Dayal said it was a privilege to help those in need.

“I provided in good faith with a good heart to help those who desperately need our help,” Mr Dayal said.

“We may or may not be able to understand the emotional trauma and loss that people have faced nevertheless, whatever helping hand we can lend we should give our best.”

Rewa Rice Limited mill manager Ashrit Pratap said: “We feel that as a Government subsidiary, it is our responsibility to assist fellow Fijians in times of need,” Mr Pratap said.

“The damage is extensive, however we have donated whatever we could and we will explore other areas to assist and also provide more donations.

“We request all Fijians to help one another to rebuild Fiji where we were a week ago,” he said.
