An unforgettable night!

That’s how Tropical Cyclone Winston victim, Ashni Lata, described the horrifying ordeal she faced last Saturday.

Ms Lata, 33, is one of the nine family members who were blown out of their home at Tuvavatu Settlement in Rakiraki, Ra.

Ms Lata’s mother-in-law, Vidya Wati is also recovering at the CWMH.

As she rests at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH) with her right leg heavily bandaged, Ms Lata said: “I have never come across a cyclone as strong as this and it brings with it heavy rain and strong winds.

“We were all at home on the night of the cyclone and putting up shutters to cover the windows but it was not worth the work as the monster Cyclone Winston struck our house damaging five of our seven rooms.

“We ran to one of the two rooms that were left to seek shelter strong wind blew away our rooftop and we were forced to get out the house,” she said.

Exposed to fury of Winston Ms Lata had dug her hands on the earth to prevent her from being blown away any farther.

“The night was really cold and rainy accompanied by strong winds that made it hard for me to call for the others but I could hear them calling out my name from a far.

“I am thankful to be alive,” she said.

Their neighbours took Ms Lata’s family in for shelter and transported them to the Rakiraki Hospital.

With the help of relatives, Ms Lata and her family are now in Suva.

The 65-year-old said: “I have never felt such fear in my life and despite the odds, I thank God that he kept all of us alive.”
