The Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Akbar, led a visit to Nailega Village in Tailevu and Bucalevu Village in Ra to deliver cyclone relief assistance.

This marked the first ministerial visit to Nailega Village – an important step in the Fijian Government’s recovery efforts in the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Winston.

The relief assistance to Nailega Village contained basic food items – rice, dhal, flour, biscuits and canned food, and clothing.

Additionally, Ms Akbar arranged for 26,000 litres of water to refill village water tanks.

The village has more than 140 people; 28 of the 33 homes in the village  sustained some damage.

Some families are sheltering at the village hall and a school nearby.

Nailega Village headman Laitia Segati acknowledged the immediate assistance.

“We are thankful to Minister Akbar for this timely visit; the villagers now have clean water and food items. It is very encouraging to see Government officials respond so fast to assist us and we will work together with Government to rebuild the lives of our people,” he said.

“All our plantations have been destroyed but we are surviving on the left over crops.”

Ilisapeci Nakoro, a retired school teacher, said the villagers described such visits as a chance to share their grievances.

Ms Akbar also extended her visit to Bucalevu Village in Ra to distribute food rations.

She urged the communities to stay strong and assured them that the Ministry would capitalise on its partnerships to support the recovery and rehabilitation process.
