Fiji Rallies International Support, Aid

Fiji’s international contribution under the United Nations (UN) banner will rally international aid and support.
This was highlighted by the director of the United Nations Office of the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), John Ging.
This follows the Fijian Ambassador to the United Nations Peter Thomson’s joint-presentation to member States last Friday.
“This is the first time Fiji has called for international assistance so there is already been a call of outpouring of empathy and sympathy for the people of Fiji.
“We now need to mobilise a very quick and sizeable response commencing with our empathy and sympathy,” Mr Ging said.
He also acknowledged the strong leadership of the Fijian Government in terms of their preparation and response to the devastating attack of Tropical Cyclone Winston last Saturday.
Various representatives from OCHA-member States rendered their condolences and also assured the Fijian Government that they would assist in the rebuilding of our island home.
Mr Thomson, in his presentation, highlighted the scale of devastation the cyclone victims were going through.
He also pleaded with OCHA-member States on the need to sign, rectify and adopt the Paris Agreement in April.
