The Spain national 7s team captain Ingancio Martin says Fiji will “rise again” after the devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Winston.

Spain top the #StrongerthanWinston Rugby 7s Fundraising Appeal and won the hearts of Fijians who showed up at the game by giving the prizemoney, $2000, back to the Prime Ministers Cyclone Relief Fund.

Martin said the team felt at home with the amount of support they got from the crowd and hopes the people of Fiji will recuperate soon.

“We really felt at home as this is our home ground and we hope to come back very soon,” Martin said.

“We send all our regards and strength to the people who suffered during the cyclone and we hope that you recover soon. We know that Fiji will rise again.”

Spain beat Coral Coast 7s champions Police 24-14 at the Uprising Beach Resort yesterday.

$5000 was collected from donation but the total amount will be known today.

Spain aim for Hong Kong 7s

Spain initially came to Fiji for the inaugural West 7s Rugby Series but it was postponed due to TC Winston.

Teammate Iñaki Villanueva said even though they were happy to help with raising funds for those affected by the cyclone, the tournament was what they needed to help them prepare for the Hong Kong 7s on April 8-10.

“The level of rugby here in Fiji is so different and a little bit out of our comfort zone but I think that, that is a boost for us as we prepare for Hong Kong,” Villanueva said.

“The way the Fijians play is so great to see, the little skills that they do like the side-step comes so naturally to them while for us, it is something that we have to learn to do.

“I can say that we have learnt a lot from the people of Fiji, not only on the field but off the field as well and we will have a lot to work on in our preparation for Hong Kong.

“To the people of Fiji, you have our love and support and we thank you for your hospitality and support and we know that you will pull through during this tough time.”
