National Flash Appeal Soon

Fiji will be conducting a flash appeal this week, says Fiji’s Ambassador to the United Nations (UN), Peter Thomson.
He said during his joint-presentation with the Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) to UN-member States in New York last Friday.
Mr Thomson stated in his presentation that Tropical Cyclone Winston cost the Fijian economy around $1 billion USD (F$2.11bn).
The flash appeal is a tool for structuring a co-ordinated humanitarian response in the first three to six months of an emergency. The UN Humanitarian co-ordinator triggers it in consultation with all stakeholders.
Mr Thomson said that the appeal would be issued to all permanent missions and observer missions including OCHA.
He also assured that the Prime Minister’s National Disaster and Rehabilitation Fund had the highest national integrity and any form of assistance or donation made to the fund is properly documented and accounted for.
Mr Thomson also pleaded with leaders from all over the globe that Fiji was safe for tourism and that the industry was important as it would assist in the recovery of Fiji’s economy.
