Classes resumed at Vasist Muni Memorial Primary School in Maqere, Tavua yesterday, the first since Tropical Cyclone Winston took its toll on February 20.

Some students had to study in tents as their classrooms were badly damaged during the monster cyclone.

Deputy Headboy Sonal Singh, a Year Seven student, said, “I think there is no excuse to miss school even if there is no uniform; what is more important than education?”

“We will miss the luxury of studying in a classroom as we are in a make-shift tent; our classroom was damaged and it will take time but I have to be in school.”

Year Eight student Viliame Nakau said,“I lost my uniform in the cyclone yet I came to school believing it is important.”

His home was damaged with their kitchen roof ripped off; his mum bedridden yet he still came to school without lunch and was handed a lunch pack by his teacher.

Head teacher Vaneeta Prasad said five classrooms were damaged during the cyclone.

“We just have to put in a strategy to allow students no interruption in their classes at this time of crisis,” Ms Prasad said.

“We have slotted two classes in our room with two teachers teaching with library, board room, my office and kitchen all used as classrooms.”

A parent, Sivaniolo Naqau of Vatutavui Village, was among the 15 people who volunteered to clean up the classrooms and compound yesterday.

“For the love of our children and education I am here to assist the school so that the environment is clean,” he said.

The school has a total roll of 120 with 19 in kindergarten.
