Twenty-two medics are working in teams in parts of Ra to help the victims of Tropical Cyclone Winston.

They are from the Australian Medical Assistance Team (AUSMAT) to help in the rehabilitation after the devastation left behind by the category 5 cyclone.

The medics are working in five teams. Among them is Darwin-based Doctor Andrew Magness who is part of the team at Rakiraki Hospital.

“We are a group of Australian medical officers who are deployed to any country that faces a natural disaster or crisis,” Dr Magness said.

He said his team arrived into the country last Thursday.

“We have treated more than 200 patients since going into villages with local nurses and doctors. This is our profession and the passion to help brought us here to assist Fijians in a time of need like this.

He said the five teams travelled to different parts of Ra daily.

“The teams have been trained to work in different areas and attend to all health related issues. We attend to people, treat infections and help those who need assistance.

“We have visited Mataso, Barotu, and other villages.”

Another medic, Nadine Tipping, 39, a midwife said: “It is our duty to assist in any manner we could. The team has been trained in various fields like logistics and other departments.”

AUSMAT personnel are part of the Australian government’s humanitarian help to Fiji after the cyclone.
