Rape And Sexual Offence Stats For The Month Of February

The following data is authorised for release by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) and relates to the number of formal indictments (Information) filed in the High Courts of Fiji by the Director of Public Prosecutions throughout the month.

This data is confined to incidents of serious sexual offences only.

There were 17 people charged with a total of 38 separate incidents in February.

The offences were rape (24), attempted rape (1), indecent assault (1), sexual assault (11) and one incident of pornographic activities involving a juvenile.

There were 20 victims of the 38 separate incidents. There were 12 victims under the age of 18 years. Of the 12, there were 8 rape victims under the age of 18 of which two victims were also sexually assaulted and one was also a victim of pornographic activity.

There was one serious sexual offence that involved a 15 year old juvenile and a 3 year old victim.

There were 7 serious sexual offences that occurred in domestic settings. There were three serious sexual offences that involved religious leaders.

One case was discontinued before the courts after a discontinuance (Nolle Prosequi) was filed for one rape matter as a result of a false complaint. Refer to the table entitled ODPP Rape and Sexual Offences Statistics February 2016 for a break-down of these statistics.
