The National Disaster Management Office is advising the general public not to set fire deliberately, especially in areas affected by Tropical Cyclone Winston.

Director Disaster Management, Mr Akapusi Tuifagalele said that burning during this time is not welcomed because it further stresses the already disturbed environment and communities.

“We encourage the public to be vigilant while burning rubbish as fire spreads quickly during this dry period,” Mr Tuifagalele said.

“We have seen a lot of fallen withered trees. If these places catch fire, it will spread quickly and may become a tragedy.”

Mr Tuifagalele is also calling on parents to supervise their children and to keep them away from any flammable substance.
