Talks are still underway to televise the second round of the Super Rugby matches this week on our free-to-air television stations.

This follows the last minute cancellation of the first round of games last weekend on FBC TV and Fiji TV.

Fiji Broadcasting Corporation chief executive Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum hopes for a positive outcome this week.

“At a time like this where there is so much pain and suffering rugby is a sport that brings the country together and it would have given the people some entertainment.

“Fortunately we hope to fix that situation in the next few days,” Sayed-Khaiyum said.

“We were supposed to play the Super Rugby on Friday that got cancelled because the Pacific team that was out of New Zealand to provide us with the coverage of the rugby got in touch in the last minute; in fact about an hour before on Friday to tell us that they will not be able to give it to us.

“They cited technical reasons and possibly some legal reasons as well on their part ,we don’t have the full details on that yet , they actually got in touch with us Saturday again telling us that the Saturday game can’t be provided for us as well and cited the same reasons,” he added.

“Whatever had happened is no fault of FBC it is with the providers that the reasons lay that is not being able to broadcast the games.”

In recent reports the New Zealand Government was working with its broadcasters to provide complimentary free-to-air rights for the Pacific Islands TV stations.

This was for two New Zealand-based games a week live to all free-to-air operators in the region.

However, it is still unclear how this fell through.

It is understood that the commercial rights for Super Rugby had been issued to a Jamaican company which has links with Digicel.
