The US Embassy announces that the United States will provide additional assistance toward the relief efforts following devastating Cyclone Winston.

The United States will provide US$500,000 (F$1,072,250) to sustain displaced families with water, sanitation and hygiene assistance, as well as another US$200,000 (F$428,900) to support humanitarian co-ordination. These efforts add to the US$100,000 (F$214,450) provided by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) on February 24.

The US is committed to sustained cooperation with Fiji to help communities build resilience in dealing with natural disasters through programs such as the Coastal Community Adaptation (CCAP) programme. Two CCAP communities along the impacted southern coast of Vanua Levu weathered the storm without significant damage, and we rejoiced in the fact that the four cyclone-proof homes funded by USAID in Vunisavisavi are intact and served as shelter during the storm.

On January 22, 2016, the Office of US Foreign Disaster Assistance launched a programme called “Building Resilient Communities” with the Fiji Red Cross, which includes a grant of US$1,278,000 (F$2,740,671).
