A 16-member family in Veisari outside Lami was lucky to escape a fire that destroyed their home on Tuesday night.

The house had seven bedrooms, two living rooms and a big kitchen. The fire started about 8:30pm.

Home owner Jimmy Pickering said: “I was with my family in one of the living rooms having our family conversation.

“While we were talking, we heard a loud noise in one of the rooms. We ran to check and saw the ceiling of the room on fire,” he said.

Mr Pickering said they couldn’t save anything as he tried to save his family first.

“Things happened so fast that the house went up in flames in minutes. None of my family members are injured,” he said.

Mr Pickering claimed the National Fire Authority (NFA) arrived about 9pm.

In another fire, a family in Waituri, Nausori managed to escape when their house was completely destroyed on the same night.

NFA is conducting investigation.
