Police have reiterated warnings to residents of settlements and villagers living along the  Wainibuka River beginning from Wailotua village to the Rewa Delta. They are to refrain from using the river as a water source for washing, bathing, cooking or drinking.

This was after a truck veered off the road while transporting a container of Sodium Cyanide (poisonous gas) to Vatukoula to be used at the gold mine.

“The directive still stands,” said Police spokesperson Inspector Josaia Weicavu yesterday.

“The Mineral Resources Department and the National Fire Authority are working on clearing the container and truck as well” Inspector Weicavu said.

“We will wait until the clearance is given by the Mineral Resources Department.”

He said the truck was following its normal route to Vatukoula and Police investigation on the cause of the accident is still continuing.

He said the truck driver had been admitted at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital after being transferred from Korovou Hospital.  Parents and guardians should ensure that their children are safe and refrain from using the river.
