$600 MILLION! A Time And Chance To Do The Right Thing

Here’s a message to everyone now getting money from the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF): Do the right thing.

The FNPF, following discussions with the Government, has relaxed the guidelines for withdrawal of members’ funds. This is to assist people to get back on their feet following the devastation by monster Cyclone Winston.

If 100,000 Fijians withdraw $6000 this will mean $600 million will be withdrawn.

While it is the responsibility of FNPF staff to implement this new relaxed policy, it is our responsibility to be responsible about it.

FNPF is the largest cash holder in the country. The approximate $600 million that will be withdrawn is not a small amount.

FNPF’s board needs to be commended for working with Government, particularly with Finance Minister and Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, to relax the requirements for the partial withdrawal of our retirement funds.

If every Fijian who withdraws money is honest and not greedy about this, some $600 million will be injected back into our economy.

People will not need to sit and wait for Government and other agencies to come in and assist them.

With at least $6000, people can start rebuilding their lives and the lives of their relatives back in the villages, rural areas and islands.

This will also be a huge help to Government as it works on the massive task of recovery from this massive disaster.

Thousands of families from Koro, Vanuabalavu, Ra and other areas do need assistance. This is where we, their relatives, can come in and help.

This is where the money from Fiji National Provident Fund can be put to best use.

This is what each and every one of us who is withdrawing funds from the FNPF coffers need to be mindful about.

Now is not the time to be greedy.

Now is not the time to sit and wait for help to reach us and our loved ones. Now is the time to act, the time to take charge of the situation and put money taken out of FNPF to good use. This is the use it was intended for.

This again is a plea to all those Fijians who are standing in queues outside various FNPF offices. Do the right thing.

Do not take this money out if you do not need it to rebuild your life after the devastation of Winston. Do not make a false declaration, which is a criminal act.

Kudos to the FNPF board for also coming down hard on their staff who are not implementing the new relaxed policy of the board.

Now the onus is on all of use who are taking advantage of this. Do the right thing
