Media outlets in Fiji had played a major role in covering areas devastated by Tropical Cyclone Winston says Royal New Zealand Navy sub lieutenant, Samuel Murray.

The 21-year-old was among more than hundred crew members on board the HMNZS Canterbury carrying more than 160 tonnes of humanitarian aid assistance that arrived at the Suva Port yesterday.

“We have had daily updates on damage assessment of Tropical Cyclone Winston in various parts of Fiji. The media had also assisted us with our work; like where the tropical cyclone occurred, what we were likely to see and where help was needed,” he said.

Sub-Lieutenant Murray said he had served for the Royal New Zealand Navy for more than three years.

“I was in Vanuatu last year helping out Cyclone Pam victims.”

His job on board is to navigate the ship; something like a watch keeper.”
