The Chinese Embassy’s Charge d’Affaires, counsellor  Gu Yu yesterday handed over a cheque for US$1million (F$2.12m) to Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama for the PM’s relief fund.

The Chinese relief package also included relief equipment and supplies including tents, blankets and generators valued at 50 million RMB (almost F$15million)

Mr Yu said the aid package was evidence of the true friendship between our two countries and people.

“China and Fiji are good partners, sharing mutual understanding and support.  The strategic partnership featured mutual respect and common development after the successful visit by H.E the President, Xi Jinping in 2014.

“Our co-operation brought new development opportunities for our two countries and benefitted our two people.  Chinese people will never forget that Fiji extended their generosity and provided emergency assistance to China when Wenchuan earthquake occurred in 2008.

“We share the feeling and empathise with Fijian people on their difficulties; we deeply admire the self improvement of the Fijian people on disaster relief efforts under the effective strong leadership of the Fijian Government and also commend the International community on their timely assistance,” Mr Yu said.

He also extended the Minster for Foreign Affairs of China, Wang Yi’s sympathy and condolences on behalf of the Chinese government.

“China took the lead in providing aid to Fiji and donated the first cash grant of US$100,000,” he said.
