Tropical Cyclone Winston left behind damaged estimated at $3million for the Then India Sanmarga Ikya (TISI) Sangan properties.

National president Sadasivan Naicker said: “We have done the assessment and it is a big damage. Some schools were destroyed and the foundation accounted close to $3million including temples and other properties owned by TISI Sangam.”

He said their schools in Ba and Rakiraki suffered serious massive damage such as Madhuvani Sangam, Penang High and Penang Primary.

In Ba – Koronubu Sangam, Tagitagi Sangam, Raviravi Sangam, Ba Sangam Primary and Ba Sangam College, Vunitogoloa Sangam, and Navoli Sangam blew away.

“When schools are extensively damaged, they include computers, books, furniture, and teachers’ quarters,” he said.

Mr Naicker said repairs had also been done to schools in Ba and Rakiraki.

“Ba has started and Rakiraki will start once school commences. Generators have being supplied to schools to restore communication and help them with other minor works.

Last month TISI Sangam approved $300,000 to assist victims of the cyclone.

“Between 7500 – 15,000 stationery packs had been  organised for students and 5000 packs had been distributed. Stationery is not only for Sangam schools, but for other affected schools including Taveuni and Savusavu.

He said TISI Sangam has started to repair and rebuild  temples that were affected.

During its management council meeting, TISI Sangam decided to hand $25,000 over to the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund.
