The Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts, Hon. Dr. Mahendra Reddy

The Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts, Mahendra Reddy, with senior education officers visited six Ra rural schools yesterday.

The schools visited were Nalaba District School, Nailuva District School, Fulton Primary School, Namuaniwaqa Village School, Tokaimalo District School and Bayly Memorial School.

Most of these schools were severely damaged and the damage assessment ranged from 60 per cent to 90 per cent.

Despite the impacts, hardships and challenges faced by the community, the evacuees at Ra, in particular Nalaba and Nailuva were pleased to meet the Education Minister. There was a positive turnout by the evacuees at the evacuation centres to meet and greet the Minister. The trauma faced during the cyclone began to fade away as they congregated at the evacuation centre.

Tears of happiness were shed as they shared their experiences while a few were very emotional as they recalled the night of terror.

The Minister assured the two schools that it was the government’s priority to improve the infrastructure of those schools which were affected by the cyclone. This is to ensure the resumption of classes at its earliest. In the meantime, the schools will be provided with temporary tents and tarpaulins whilst rebuilding the school infrastructure.
