Joining an urban school can be very challenging, especially coming from a maritime zone.

For 18-year-old student Tomasi Makasiale, a student from Adi Maopa Secondary School in Vanuabalavu, it might be the biggest challenge he would face in his youth.

However, the, Vanuabalavu native is optimistic and believes competition will help bring out the best in him.

Tomasi, originally from Sawana Village in Vanuabalavu, is currently attending Assemblies of God School in Kinoya.

“I have been attending Adi Maopa from Year One until Year 13 but due to the devastating damage the cyclone had done to my school, I was advised by my grandmother to come to Suva.

“I have been living with my grandmother ever since I was small and believe that I was saved by my grandmother’s prayers during the fierce attack of TC Winston.

“My grandmother is 74-years-old and I have never experienced such fear in my life, just seeing how the trees swayed and roof top blown, it was so terrifying.

“I thank God for protecting my grandmother and I will do my best to reach my dream of becoming a Doctor and make my grandmother and parents proud.”

Adi Maopa Secondary School is located in the village of Lomaloma, the Government station of the island.
