Road Authority Thanks The Industry Partners

Fiji Roads Acting CEO Rory Garland in a statement said it has been a challenging time since Cyclone Winston.

He praised all who had helped in the recovery.

“I would like to extend a huge ‘thank you’ to all of Fiji Roads Authority’s industry partners for helping to get Fiji’s roads, bridges and jetties working again,” Mr Garland said.

He said the achievements have been substantial and are being recognised widely across Fiji.

“Within a few days the whole of primary road network was open providing supply routes and emergency access across both of the main islands,” Mr Garland said.

He said within 5 days all the major jetties on Viti Levu and Vanua Levu were ready for use allowing inter-island transport of people and goods.

“These jetties are also critical for providing supply and emergency access to the badly hit outer islands.

“One of the worst hit islands was Koro, where the jetty causeway was washed out.”

Mr Garland said despite the logistics difficulties , they got machinery and operators to the island and had repaired the jetty.

“More than 3,000kms of the rural unsealed network has been inspected.

“Over three quarter of all barriers to access (fallen trees, landslips, culvert and crossing washouts etc) on these roads have been resolved.”

All this work has been led by our Principal Consultant MWH and main Maintenance Contractors Higgins in Western Division and Fulton Hogan Highways  Central and Northern Division.

Much of the credit also has to go to the subcontractors who contributed to this effort in the Northern Division Digtrak, Paradise, Kashmir Transport, Feizel Bulldozing, Fairdeal and  Prems (Taveuni).
