The Government barge, Vunilagi, left for the Yasawa group yesterday taking food rations and tarpaulins to those villages affected by Tropical Cyclone Winston.

This was confirmed by divisional planning officer western Sitiveni Tavaga

“The Vunilagi is taking rations to Yasawa-i-cake villages like Yasawa-i-rara and Naviti for those affected by TC Winston,” he said.

The Commissioner Western’s Office said the Government barge Vunilagi had been used by the Emergency Operations Centre to transport food rations, relief assistance and water to islands affected by TC Winston like Yasawa, Koro and Vanuabalavu in the Lau group.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) team had been working tirelessly to relocate evacuees who have been using schools as evacuation centres.   This so that it does not interfere with the students’ education.

There are 261 evacuation centres still active in the West.

About 7899 evacuees are still in these centres.

For the Rakiraki evacuation centres, there are about 6240 people in it, while Tavua has about 175 and in Ba there are about 1292 evacuees at the centre.
