Government will not condone opportunists, says National Disaster Management Office director Akapusi Tuifagalele.

He made the comments following a Fiji Sun report that some Cyclone Winston victims had been reportedly selling or bartering surplus rations provided by the NDMO Office and other donors.

“We are aware of the issue. We have heard the complaints, but we have not received anything formal from our people on the ground and this is something we will need to look into when we speak with our Divisional Commissioners,” Mr Tuifagalele said.

Commissioner Western Manasa Tagicakibau said he had already alerted the Roko Tui and district advisory councillors to be aware of the issue especially when there were many organisations distributing food rations.

As for Government, he said food rations for one month had been distributed.

He said Government officials involved in the distribution of food rations had also been alerted on the matter.

Commissioner Central, Setareki Tale said he was not aware of the matter.

He said his office had just cut down the distribution of rations to two week’s supply instead of a month to stop abuse by families. He said they also had their own people on the ground keeping a close tab on the issue.

Yesterday, the NDMO conducted a stock take of all relief supplies in its custody in order to determine their course of action for the next 15 days.

“The Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption (FICAC) and the Auditor-General are closely working with NDMO in this,” Mr Tuifagalele said.

“More than 80 per cent of the communities affected by the cyclone have been assisted and we have targeted that by Day 15 (today) of the operation, all the affected communities should be assisted.”
