Ben Ryan said the Vodafone Fijian 7s team need to play smart defensively and put plenty of energy into the attack and set pieces against USA in the Cup semifinal today.

Coach Ryan said with the inclusion of the Pacific islanders Folau Niua, Maka Unufe and Martin Iosefo coupled with pace and power, USA is getting to be one of the most dangerous teams on the series.

“USA is a good side across the board, they obviously have got some pace and some good power within the team,” Ryan said.

“They also got those Pacific islanders in the mix which gives them a point of difference because they like to offload and perhaps they don’t like to play within the American structure and offload a little bit and that make them dangerous. I’m sure it’s going to be a good battle.

“We need to control the ball against USA and play smart defensively and bring plenty of energy into our attack and set piece.”

Taking each game at a time is the strategy Fiji is going for after an impressive Day Two performance yesterday which left Ryan happy.

“Control what we can and get our preparation right. We need to focus on the semifinal and within that, focus on play by play, pass by pass, tackle by tackle and ruck by ruck,” he said.

“We cannot afford to get too far ahead of ourselves but all in all I was pleased with the performance on the second day.

“It was an excellent day. We played well against a great Argentina side that put a lot of pressure on us in all areas. Cup quarterfinals are always tough affairs and it was good to have a convincing 14 minutes.

“The support at the stadium has been excellent and we are looking forward to seeing them all cheering us on tomorrow (today). Vinaka also for all the messages from home. It means a lot.”
