Cane farmers have a reason to smile.

The Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) will be distributing $18million tomorrow as cane payments to the farmers battered by Cyclone Winston.

FSC chairman Abdul Khan said: “The farmers are definitely receiving cane payments and it is scheduled for Wednesday(09/03/16) by latest whereby they would be paid $9.88 per tonne.

“This is the routine third cane payment and we are giving out this payment early at the Government’s request.”

He said the payment was usually done at the end of March but they have brought it forward so that farmers could use that money especially after Cyclone Winston.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Yusuf Manu, 79, and his brother Faruq Ali, 53, from Lovu cane producing sector in Lautoka were happy with the good news.

“We are glad that the process of payment has been brought forward at an earlier date,” Mr Manu said.

“I will be using this cane payment to do repair works on my house. Some money will also be used to pay labourers to work on the farm so that a few tonnes of cane are available for harvesting this crushing season.

“Crops in my farm have been badly affected but come next year I would be able to get back on track,  producing the same amount as I used to before the cyclone struck.”
