Helping Ourselves Can Help Govt Aid Those In Real Need

Fiji is on the path to recovery. We all know that.

What we sometimes don’t take into account is the enormous task that lies ahead for Government. This is to meet the expectations of all who have had their lives turned upside down following the devastation of Tropical Cyclone Winston.

But, should it only be the responsibility of Government? Definitely and absolutely.

And, it has been praiseworthy that tens of thousands of Fijians of all backgrounds have put their hand up to assist fellow Fijians.

But Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum yesterday shared his surprise about something that has also become apparent. While some smaller businesses had made donations up to $50,000, some of the bigger businesses were content with donations of $25,000.

That aside, it is encouraging to note that our financial institutions – our banks – have come onboard to assist their customers in this time of need. That’s by getting recovery packages together.

We have many options out there to get us back on our feet.

We have the option of partial withdrawal of our Fiji National Provident Fund money, and now with banks onboard, we also have the option of some unsecured loans as well.

So, instead of waiting for Government why don’t those who have the means go ahead and rebuild their lives?

This will leave Government free to concentrate on those who really need help.

Fiji Airways, thank you

Kudos again to our national airline. It is at the forefront of efforts to get the tourists back and to show that we are open for business.

The special fares from Australia and New Zealand the associated media campaigns underscore this.

They illustrate yet again why we need our own national airline, an airline that is totally and constantly committed to our country.

That is always there when need them. Just as Fiji Airways and all who work there are right now.
