French patrol Navy vessel ‘La Moqueuse’ is in the country to help the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) teams assist people affected by Tropical Cyclone Winston in the Lau Group.

The vessel also brought two tonnes of emergency relief kits from the French Red Cross which includes hygiene kits and temporary shelter.

The Navy vessel is part of the French Armed Force in New Caledonia and brings with it 14 military engineers.

They join French Military aircraft already helping here.

French ambassador to Fiji Michel Dojokovic said: “We were successful in organising a boat in this mission to assist Fiji and help people affected by Tropical Cyclone Winston.

“Under the directive from NDMO, the engineers will be deployed to the Lau Group. The engineers will co-ordinate with NDMO for some reconstruction.

Mr Dojokovic said the engineers would go with the NDMO team to some islands where no ships have gone to so far.

Mr Dojokovic said France was always ready to assist Fiji.

“We are very happy and very supportive and from the embassy we are facilitating and co-ordinating with the military and surveillance authorities in order to do more to help Fiji,” he said.
