A man charged with one count of giving false information to a public servant has been sentenced to 25 months imprisonment.

Ben Padarath appeared before Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne at the Suva Magistrates Court yesterday.

Charges

Padarath falsely communicated with the Immigrations director, Nemani Vuniwaqa, that the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama had issued a travel ban notice to a particular person.

While delivering his sentence, Magistrate Somaratne said Padarath has had previous convictions from 2006 and therefore was not a first- time offender.

He said Padarath should have known better and not to waste court’s time.

Magistrate Somaratne also considered the mitigating factors by Padarath that he was looking after his 70-year-old mother.

Also he has young children to look after and was also an active member of a church.

Padarath will be eligible for parole after 16 months.
