It was an unforgettable night for people staying in Cakaudrove at Yacata Island when Cyclone Winston hit their village last month.

Stuck in bed for the last two weeks at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva, 75-year-old Siteri Taione wants to return to her island.

Her grandson Viliame Manatewa, 19, has been looking after her since she was admitted at the CWM Hospital.

Viliame said his parents and grandmother were inside their concrete house when the strong winds of Tropical Cyclone Winston broke the walls of their house and it collapsed.

“My parents and grandmother were hiding under the table to save themselves from the strong winds and flying debris,” Viliame said.

Suddenly, one of the beams fell on  Ms Taione.

Viliame said his parents carried his grandmother to the nearest evacuation centre where she was given some treatement.

He said when help finally arrived, his grandmother was airlifted to Suva along with his parents.

“Our house is completely destroyed and my parents hope to visit the island once my grandmother has completely recovered.”

The assistant Minister for Health and Medical Services Veena Bhatnagar visited the families at the hospital yesterday.

Mrs Bhatnagar visits the patients admitted at the hospital every day.
