Commissioner Western Manasa Tagicakibau on behalf of the Fijian Government thanked Korean Air for assisting Fijians by delivering relief items to those affected by Tropical Cyclone Winston.

Officials received consignment of relief items worth $100,000 from the Korean Airline yesterday morning.

Mr Tagicakibau said: “This was organised by our Ambassador to Korea Filimoni Kau.

“We are really grateful to the Korean Air management and staff for delivering this relief items to Fiji.

“It is about 10.9 tonnes of relief items that we received. These relief items will be taken on stock and see what constitute this consignment then we will determine where we will distribute these items.”

Mr Tagicakibau added that this team will not leave the items in their distribution centre for more than 24 hours.

Korean Air (Fiji) sales and marketing manager John Yang said that as a leading global carrier, Korean Air has a strong commitment to helping with relief efforts in times of need.

“Goods being delivered to the country include 9000 litres of mineral water and hardtack biscuits. Korean Air also plans to transport donations collected from the Fiji embassy to South Korea which is more than three tonnes.”

The Korean Air plane with the goods on board had departed Incheon International Airport on Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, in previous aftermath of the Sichuan earthquake in 2008, Korean Air dispatched a special cargo flight to transport blankets and mineral water to the quake zone.

The carrier also made donations of relief goods such as 90,000 litres of mineral water and 2000 blankets to the victims of the earthquake in the northeast province of Japan in March 2011 and 60,000 litres of mineral water, 60,000 noodle cups, 24,000 of dried rice and 2000 blankets to the Philippines to aid those affected by Typhoon Haiyan.

In 2015, Korean Air delivered 24,000 bottles of mineral water, 2000 blankets, dried rice and other food materials to those affected by the earthquake in Kathmandu, Nepal.
