Women In Defence Forces United On Special Day

On International Women’s Day on March 6, women from the Australian Defence Force, New Zealand Defence Force and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces visited the women of Vuna, Taveuni.
The two villages in Vuna – Kanacea and Nakorovou – were among the most severely affected areas Cyclone Winston.
The delegation included the RFMF’s most senior woman, Colonel Litea Seruiratu.
According to Colonel Seruiratu, the visit was a fitting way to mark International Women’s Day and it was an honour to be part of a joint task force team of female military personnel.
“There was no better way to celebrate the IWD than to be amongst those women who have been affected so badly,” Colonel Seruiratu said.
To observe International Women’s Day, the Fijian, Australian and New Zealand servicewomen wore purple ribbons and sulu (sarongs).
Reflecting on the visit, Major Jo Richards of the ADF said the needs of women and children are essential to disaster response.
“The women of Taveuni are not alone,” Major Richards said.
Australian High Commission Defence Office Manager, Bernadette Daurewa also credited the camaraderie between the Fijian, Australian and New Zealand servicewomen for making the trip possible.
Australia remains a strong and consistent advocate for women, peace and security and continues to contribute to international efforts to deliver on the promises of UN Security Council Resolution 1325.
