Over four generation of memories went up in smoke when the Verma family of Korovuto outside Nadi lost everything in a fire on Saturday morning.

Seven people lost everything in the two flats as there were a lot of cherished memories attached to their house which was razed to ground.

“These flats were built during my great grandfather’s days and we added on to the property from time to time and now there’s nothing more left,” said the house owner’s son Avinesh Verma, 26.

The fire had started from the tenant’s kitchen at around 12.10am when all were asleep.

“We wanted to save the tenant’s flat but it was too late to stop it since the fire was spreading very quickly to our house, we managed to move the tractor but only had the clothes we wore.”

He said they were unsure how the fire started but they managed to take everyone out in time.

The estimated cost of the damage is $200,000 and investigations continue to ascertain the cause of fire.

Chief fire officer Qionilau Moceitai has urged all the home owners to take precautionary measures and avoid such incidences.
