The devastation caused by Tropical Winston will boost the weightlifting team’s preparation for the Oceania Olympic Qualifiers on May 23-28.

The 16 lifters lost their belongings and gym in Baba, Levuka. Apolonia Vaivai described the February 20 experience as terrifying.

“We were in camp on the day Winston hit and by 4pm the wind was strong and it destroyed everything,”Vaivai said.

“It was a frightening experience and we have to duck for cover.”

Vaivai, Seruwaia Malani, Sofia Kirikirikula and Julia Jimi travelled to Suva last week to continue their preparation for the Oceania meet.

“Even though our gym was destroyed we’ve faith that we will do well as we survived and we are stronger.

“Now it’s time to rise and make our country proud. Winston has lifted our preparation to another different level.

“We all want to take part in the Rio Olympics and we just can’t wait to get there and participate and do well for our country.”

Despite losing almost everything the lifters are determined to achieve positive results.

“We want to thank the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) for donating clothes and Oceania Weightlifting for gym equipments and eating utensils,” she said.

Jimi acknowledges the family support towards the team.

“We just want to thank the Lord for his protection and also our families for their never ending support,” Jimi said.

Malani said they just can’t wait for game day.

“We just can’t wait to do all Fijians proud,” Malani said.

Meanwhile, the male lifters are training and rebuilding the gym in Baba, Levuka.
