A 48-year-old woman of Boitaci in Vanuabalavu in the Lau group could not hold back her tears during the memorial service for victims of Tropical Cyclone Winston.

Elenoa Joy was among the many people who flocked to the Ratu Sukuna Park in Suva last Friday night to attend the service.

The service was held to commemorate the 44 lives lost and also a thanksgiving service for those who survived the deadly ordeal faced by many in Lau, Ra, Lomaiviti and Taveuni that fateful Saturday more than three weeks ago.

Ms Joy lost her uncle, Gauna Bale, aunt, Salaseini Tavo, cousin, Sakiusa Veiqaravi and nephew, Temolesi Lesi during the height of Cyclone Winston.

The four who died at Boitaci Village, were among the five that died at Vanuabalavu.

Ms Joy said she was in town when she saw the banner for the service and thought to stay for it.

“It was good being a part of this. I am here to remember the lives of my close family members who were lost during the cyclone,” said an emotional Ms Joy.

“It has been a very difficult time for us losing these four all at once. Attending this service here tonight brings back memories of them.

“I know they are not here physically but I can feel their presence all throughout the service.”

The memorial service was organised by the Fiji National Youth Parliament Alumni.
