A chartered four-engine Antonov cargo plane will touch down at Nausori International Airport on Thursday with the first batch of disaster relief items from China.

Eight freighter plane flights into Nadi lnternational Airport and Nausori will bring $15 million worth of supplies China is sending to help Fijians affected by Cyclone Winston.

This was confirmed by Gu Yu, Charge d’Affaires ad Interim of the Chinese Embassy in Suva.

The Chinese government is chartering planes from Ukraine and Singapore to help with the logistics of the urgent airlift. They include Boeing 747 jumbo jets.

The $15m aid package is in addition to China’s immediate US$1m (more than F$2m) cash grant straight after Winston hit.

The aid being ferried in includes tents, sleeping materials, first aid kits, portable generators, torches and flashlights and water purification tablets. It is designed to immediately help people.

Tents and waterproof canvases being sent will also be able to be used to set up temporary classrooms.

Mr Gu said Chinese government ministries and leaders had worked to urgently overcome the logistical challenges of collecting so many things and flying them across the Pacific to Fiji.

It underscored, he said, the strong friendship between the leaders and people of China and Fiji.
