The Australian Foreign Affairs Minister, Julie Bishop, has been inspired by the positive spirit shown by villagers on Koro Island.

Ms Bishop visited the cyclone-ravaged island soon after she arrived in the country on Sunday.

“Any Australian who has ever visited Fiji can’t help but fall in love with the Fijian people,” Ms Bishop said.

“They are happy, they are resilient and they take tragedy in their stride and I thought it was inspiring to see how happy the children appeared to be and they were returning to school.

“This has been a tragic time for the people of Fiji. 44 casualties as a result of the cyclone, but the people are resilient and determined to restore their lives and Australia is proud to be part of this effort.”

She commended the Australian Defence personnel and said their work had been evident in the resilience of the affected villagers on Koro. Edited by Jonathan Bryce
