Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop has reassured every Fijian that the Australian Government was ready to assist us get back to normal.

They have already provided $15million in immediate response following the aftermath left behind by Tropical Cyclone Winston more than three weeks ago.

“Australia will continue to support and work with the Fijian Government in restoring Fiji back to normal,” Ms Bishop said.

“One other issue that is quite disturbing is the agricultural crops which  have been devastated. So this season there will be a loss of income and that has an impact on the economy.

“Australia stands ready to support Fiji in helping with the economy and getting crops back in for planting.”

Apart from meeting Fijian counterpart, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, she also met with Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.

The two not only discussed recovery efforts in Fiji but also Australia’s role in working with authorities to provide basic food, shelter and sanitation, hygiene equipment and also longer term recovery efforts.

“We are working with the Fijian Government and we will respond to the request from the Government for further help,” she said.

“We understand that there will be an overall needs assessment undertaken in the next few days and Australia stands ready to continue to support Fiji at this time.”
