Danger alert! Are your young on Facebook

Primary school students, meaning students as young as 11, 12 years old have Facebook accounts.

Do their parents know? Do they monitor the online activity of their children?

Do they know who ends up on their friend list? Should they care?

Of course they should and so should every teacher.

We have had young women allegedly raped after being lured through social media.

One Fijian woman is in a Malaysian jail after she went to meet a man who befriended through social media then allegedly used her to carry drugs.

All these are not enough to ring warning bells?

What makes it worse, some teachers had also been noted posting pictures of students, pictures of minors on their social media sites.

This opens the whole Pandora’s Box as far as minors and social media are concerned.

Firstly, teachers are well aware that Facebook requires every user to provide their date of birth which is used to filter out and to stop minors from having accounts without parental consent.

So, instead of notifying their parents and discussing with parents the dangers of social media, some teachers tag their students on pictures, on e-Christmas cards and what not.

Are you as a parent comfortable with this?

15 to 20 years ago, this was not an issue. But right now, in today’s day and age, it is and it is a big issue. Every parent should be concerned if their children are on various social networking sites, chatting to and accepting friend requests of strangers.

Every teacher should also now be trained to handle such issues, not to aggravate the situation by themselves putting up pictures of their students online.

Somebody needs to take responsibility for this. And truth is, it starts from home. It starts with you and I and all adults.
