Ashwin Raj is the new Director of the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission.

The announcement was made by Justice Mohamed Ajmeer, Chairperson of the Commission.

This appointment is pursuant to section 18 (1) (a) of the Human Rights Commission Decree No. 11 of 2009.

Justice Ajmeer said: “Mr. Raj joins the Commission with a wealth of experience having served as an academic and a record of constructive engagement with civil society, State and the international community in the field of human rights, governance and democracy.

“Mr. Raj’s expertise will greatly benefit the Commission to fulfil its mandated responsibilities enshrined in the 2013 constitution with additional scope of the ‘anti-discrimination’ provision to its portfolio.”

The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission is statutory body established under Section 45 of  the  Constitution of the Republic of the Fiji islands. The roles and functions of the Commission are stipulated in CHAPTER 2 – Bill of Rights, supplemented by the Human Rights Commission Decree 11/09.
