Girls and women should be free from any form of discrimination, says Rosy Akbar.

The Minister for Women, Children and Pioverty Alleviation made these comments during the delayed Soroptimist International Lautoka branch celebration of the International Women’s Day at Tilak High School last Saturday.

The theme was “Pledge for Parity” and the event also had the oratory contest for rural and urban primary school students.

“Gender equality is paramount and we must try and bring men and women to the same level. Girls and women should be free from discrimination, and we must try and narrow the gap,” Ms Akbar said.

“We are here to celebrate a belated Women’s Day; our efforts need to continue and we must raise more awareness.

Ms Akbar thanked the teachers who had taken their time to prepare the students for this oratory.

She said it was very encouraging that boys have also started to take part in the oratory contest where important matters are being talked about.

Ms Akbar said, “Commitment must be made that women and children who are affected have access to medical care, food, water and proper sanitation. Many boys are also participating in this oratory so you are already on your way to fighting for the equality of women.”

Twenty-three schools from Lautoka took part in the oratory competition.

Meanwhile, rural oratory prizewinner was Josephine Faiza, a Year Seven student of Lovu Sangam School.

And winner for the urban oratory competition was Akrati Dutt, a Year Seven student of Lautoka Central Primary School.
