Five people have been taken in by the Fiji Police Force for questioning in relation to the rape and murder of Mere Ailevu.

Police chief of intelligence Senior Superintendent Luke Navela confirmed that five persons of interest have been questioned, their statements recorded and they were released as their investigations continue.

Twenty-five Police officers and officers from the Police Dog Unit have been working around the clock gathering information and evidence related to Mere’s death.

The Lomary Catholic Primary School Year Seven student was found dead and half-naked last Monday at Loloma Beach, Pacific Harbour, not far from a Christian Camp where she was preparing for Palm Sunday.

SSP Navela said while people were coming forward with information, a number of people were still withholding information.

“We feel that a lot of people know things but are withholding information from Police. However, we are certain that the culprits will be brought to justice soon,” he said.

One of those questioned owns the Tee-shirt that was found tied around Mere’s neck when she was found at the beach.

Suspects are from around the area where Mere’s family lives.

Information that Police have been receiving includes an earring found on a bus stop which the finder claims belongs to Mere.

The bus stop is located farther up the road from where Mere’s body was found.

Police officers have also set up a tent close to the area where Mere was found. SSP Navela said officers continued to be on the scene to assure the small Lepanoni Settlement community that they were safe.

He said they were certain arrests would be made soon.
