Outrage Over Coverage Misses Point

Excuse me?

Some of the social media chatterati still make noise about our use of the word rape in headlines about the murder of church-loving Mere Ailevu, 14.

Surely they should be outraged at this shocking crime and the continuing prevalence of rapes in our society. Not outraged by newspaper headlines which reflect the horror of this.

Let’s not escape the reality..

The proliferation of rape and abuse of women and girls by men is a continuing shame on our society.

Have some amongst us so quickly forgotten the nine-year-old Nakasi schoolgirl grabbed, assaulted and raped on her way home from school.

Now Mere assaulted, raped, and killed.

This national shame needs to be openly confronted and addressed. Not touchy-feely treated as too “sensitive”. Or swept under the mat.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has led the efforts to put the spotlight on this continuing problem. Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho has made such crimes a priority for the force to act on.

The PM and the Commissioner know this is an issue everyone needs to confront. Like it or not.
