Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has thanked his Tuvalu counterpart Enele Sopoaga, for the financial assistance made by the people and government of Tuvalu for the victims of Tropical Cyclone Winston.

Prime Minister Bainimarama received a cash donation of FJ$249,939.71 from Prime Minister Sopoaga yesterday during their meeting at the Prime Minister’s office in Suva.

The donation will go into the Prime Minister’s National Disaster Relief and Rehabilitation Fund, which was established to directly assist Fijians affected by Cyclone Winston. Mr Bainimarama expressed his gratitude for the donation on behalf of the Government and Fijian people.

It was also an opportunity for him to brief Mr Sopoaga on the relief and rehabilitation works carried out.

Mr Sopoaga said the donation was through a two-week public appeal in Tuvalu. Around AU$10,000 (FJ$15,834.76) was collected while the Government of Tuvalu contributed AU$150,000 (FJ$237,521.40).

“The government of Tuvalu and the people of Tuvalu would like to express their sympathy to the people of Fiji during these difficult times. Our prayers are with the Government of Fiji,” Mr Sopoaga said.
